Is that worse than rotting at the top first?

I've used the open bottom technique for years, and I've never noticed a significant difference in rot. In my experience it rots where it has been cut.

I've heard that a layer of Vaseline can make it last longer. I've also heard that you can spray vinegar on the cut surfaces to prevent bacteria from growing.
