I wonder if you could take a button up shirt (probably best if it's a size up from the coat) and use that as a lining. I've never tried anything like that before, but I think it could work
That's a very interesting idea for replacing a lining completely! Maybe a satin blouse so it would slide easily over clothes. And turned inside out of course.
But in this case with just the two holes, I'd just patch it.
