If I haven't gone completely pants on head insane, don't most cameras have at least a small internal memory reserve? I mean it's always possible that this one doesn't but whatever.

The higher end ones typically do not.

Nowdays probably but this is an ancient 550D.

Very few high end cameras actually have an option to store photos internally, unfortunately. I think some super high end Hasselblads internally have an SSD (would be cool if more manufacturers did this), but most can't write photos without a card.
