However, when addressing the principles of the Republican Party, Johnson said, "We fought the Nazis. We've defended that evil ideology."

Johnson was addressing an incident where a staffer of Republican Representative Dave Taylor appeared to have a swastika in the background of a video call.

"He says that that's not his, and there's a proper investigation ongoing," Johnson told reporters. "And the congressman did exactly what he should have done and that is report it."

Johnson said he could not comment more until the investigation has been completed, but "obviously, that is not the principles of the Republican Party."

I mean, it's very obvious that he meant to say "we've defended against..." The real problem is, you aren't defending against it now! You are defending that evil ideology now. Nazis are in the Republican party, in positions if power and influence, and there is no way to be sure who isn't a Nazi.

So for anyone who sees the gaffe and thinks "Oh, he just misspoke." Yeah, probably. But recognize that it's a problem that we even have to question it in the first place. Whether House Speaker Mike Johnson is a Nazi or not, he clearly did not intend to admit to being a Nazi. THE PROBLEM IS THE FIRST PART OF THE PREVIOUS SENTENCE. It's not the gaffe.

Right, my point is that maybe it's Freudian, or maybe it's just a brain fart. The larger issue is that we don't know for sure. Like, if Pelosi had made the same mistake, you could safely assume she isn't a Nazi. Boehner is a douche canoe and a shitbag bigot, but we're fairly confident he wasn't a Nazi. Hastert was a criminal and a pedophile, but he wasn't a Nazi. Gingrich, Ryan, Michel, none of them Nazis.

Mike Johnson? Might be an actual Nazi.

That's fair. I'd go all the way back to Nixon, and you're right that we are at the end of a long path they have been marching us down.

But I don't believe they were Nazis. I believe they were selfish, myopic, cruel, ignorant, bigoted, and often simply evil. Not Nazis, though.
