Honestly its kind of amazing how far piefed has reached already with the exceptionally tiny donations. @rimu@piefed.social has done an awesome job.

It's crazy how long Lemmy is under development, and then kind of out of nowhere Piefed showed up. (I know it was probably a bit different but that's how I experienced it)
Its started to gain some traction after June of this year.

I remember some semi popular lemmy servers have decided to shut down, which left some holes....if I were to guess. Piefed is also pretty easy to standup.
