I love that idea! Instead of planting scattered individual trees, just plant whole complex miniature ecosystems!
Although I wonder if oak trees are a good choice to include.
I mean, they are somewhat slow growing and at least where I live, every second oak planting recently seems to be regularly infested with oak processionary moths, a huge health hazard.
Aren't oaks particularly good at supporting other stuff in their surroundings? It's probably worth at least trying to get some more planted even if they take longer to mature and succeed less often than other types of tree
I think that is right, although there are similarly good ones, e.g. linden and maple trees.
But I don't have any idea how they would thrive in Scotland. Also no idea if you have oak processionary moth problems at all? If not: Go ahead, plant oaks!
Oaks do okay up here! It's getting towards the colder end of where they live, but still definitely within it
The moths apparently made it to Britain in 2005 but so far have not spread beyond the south of England where they first arrived
A Scottish oak recently won the Woodland Trust's UK tree of the year award!
