I could be wrong, but this looks like one of those old-timey photo tradition of taking photos right after the person dies.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but not certain. It looks to me like she's on an opium bed. Opium was pretty common back in the day. She's probably just in bliss out of her mind on opium.
