The problem isn't that a Democrat is "standing up" to Trump via the usual "words not actions", it's that it's Newsom, who has also heavily courted prominent far right figures before as well. He doesn't believe in what he says, he just cares about power as well, and based off his recent actions, he'd likely do nothing to reign in the right wing significantly, let alone prevent anywhere dictator wannabe like Trump down the line.
It'd be like cheering on Franco criticizing Hitler, for a more well known but hyperbolic example.
But yeah, last point is true - the US government is so broken it'd be better for the world for it to either balkanize or restructure entirely to a completely new system.
