My wife works for the NPS.
A rough summary of the situation right now is that no one really knows what’s happening right now. Everyone feels like they’re going to lose their jobs any day now.
The people who should be off their probationary period are still on it and won’t be receiving proper status.
A lot of experienced Rangers took the drop, which has led to not only a loss of knowledge and experience but a lot of parks are running ghost crews. Current rangers should be the ones filling those higher roles, but in doing so, you’re marking yourself as a probationary employee.
Some open roles are not allowed to be filled at all.
To keep the public from noticing how mutilated the NPS is, they’re hiring a ton of seasonal employees. Seasonal employees don’t have enough time to really learn about the sites they’re working at or work on interpretation. Replacing full-time employees with seasonal workers also strips away more middle-class jobs.
