If you are in an HOA you already fucked up.
Getting decent housing that isn't in an HOA in some regions is a privilege a lot of people don't have. At least they were still able to attain some homeownership.
If someone can kick you out of your house because you painted your fence the wrong color then you don't own your house.
Why is everything in the US so damn weird? We don't have HOAs over here.
Usually, the answer is racism. In the case of HOAs, though, I'm going to guess that it's probably racism.
ETA: I looked it up on Wikipedia. The answer is: racism.
Gotta save themselves from the unimaginable horrors of diversity.

Grossly oversimplifying this doesn't make your crappy point valid.
I was so shocked when I learned that in the same country that gives guns to children because muH FrEedOmS, you cannot let your lawn grow out on your own property because some Karen down the road doesn't like the way it looks.
Like everything in life, not all HOAs are the same. There's definitely a bias surrounding them, because people who live in good ones don't complain every time they're mentioned.
Confidently incorrect
But how hard is it to turn a good one bad? You really just need one or two people with money and nothing to do.
That's true for pretty much anything, though.
