Reading through the comments, it turns out I've heard quite a few of their songs, and enjoyed none of them. I don't get how they were so popular.
Because they were a perfect mix of Punk and Hip Hop. It just fit right into the late 80s and 90s.
They have a historical importance in the hip-hop realm notably when it comes to sampling. See the album Paul's Boutique.
Ah, I see. So they're kinda like the Beatles, historically significant, but not actually that good.
You may or may not like the Beastie Boys but oh boy, the Beatles... Maybe one day you'll realise how great this band is on so many levels. But in the end, doesn't matter, everyone has its own tastes :-).
Try listening to Check Your Head all the way through. If you don't get it after that, you never will.
