I could be wrong, but I don't think america started because they were whiny about ~1% of their taxes going to help people

Pretty much it did because they didn't have representation. Just like you don't have representation now because of the electoral college, gerrymandering, Citizen's United, presidential immunity & a bunch of other things where Trump has nearly unlimited power. Do you see Democrats doing anything while billionaires are buying votes in broad daylight?
