Does Aunt Jane just walk around with bags and bags of money?
They don't fear her sharp tongue, they fear her legendary swinging handbag of doom (+3 crushing, withdraw 100 gp/day).
Gotta remember, this is Jansson's early work. We've all made that one overpowered NPC before.
