Who are we?

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

We are one. We are legion. And we're trying really hard not to forget.

Hi all,

I've been thinking about picking up an N150 or 5825U MiniITX board for a NAS, but I'm wondering if there are better options given my requirements.

  • At least 2x 2.5Gb LAN
  • A 10Gb LAN, or 2.5Gb if not
  • 2x NVME
  • 8x SATA for spinning disks
  • 2x SATA for SSDs
  • MiniITX is required for the 10" rack
  • 64+ Gigs of RAM (ZFS cache) (This is not possible on an N150)

The problem I'm running into with the boards I've looked at is PCIe lanes, and not having ways to expand the sata or network ports without stealing from NVME.

I've started to look at boards with PCIe 4.0x16 slots and risers/splitters for expansion, but then I can't find low power CPUs for them.

Thoughts?

This is about as close as you’re going to get. I have one of these and they’re a pain in the for memory and cooler compatibility, but once you navigate that, it’s rock solid.

Very interesting. What cooler do you use?

Edit: Also looks like there are a bunch of 35W AM4s, so not terrible there, either.

Edit 2: Oddly enough I have this https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550I-AORUS-PRO-AX-10#kf in my gaming PC which might for the bill if I were to upgrade there (also AM4). Would need to use the PCIe x16 for network and/or sata.

You either have to use the two very specific coolers that Asrock recommends or you have to mildly modify the motherboard. Once you do, you will realize the mounting bracket is for an Intel board.

I did the mod and run a Noctua tower with the LGA bracket adapter.
