It's like GT in the sense that Toriyama wanted to go back to the original DB format of having Kid Goku go on an adventure.
I think a lot of GT haters are going in expecting a sequel to Z (which it becomes in the second half), but have never watched the original DB.
Personally, I'm only watching Daima because it's Toriyama's last series.
See I think GT has been given a bit of an unfair shake. It was enjoyable but I watched the original Dragon Ball when I was a kid; it reminisced to me quite similarly, for the reason you've described - it was a fun adventure
