What needs to be remembered with the pedotator (thanks stumu415@lemmy.zip, I love it) is that his handlers work for the largest arms manufacturing companies / country in the world. Destabilizing shit is profit. Glad to see more and more of the world not putting up with the crap.

Ditch 'NATO' (It's dead Jim) military spending requirements via % of GDP, Europe just needs enough the fend off a Russia that's mostly spent on Ukraine (which should be heartily supported) for a few years until Putin inevitably gets defenestrated.

Two years of un-neutered Trump was enough to finally break Pax Americana, I guess we're moving towards Pax Sino or whatever it gets called. Sure would be nice if the middle powers got together and headed that off. Much as I like the concept of the U.N. the veto powers hobble it as a true vehicle of international unity, maybe everyone should join the EU?

Here's hoping the Dems actually keep the cheeto clown tied up in serious litigation and red tape for the next two years and the demented fool doesn't get to release the nukes. Actually effective impeachment sure would be nice. Doesn't he look tired?

Trump's biggest complaint about NATO is the lack of spending commitments from other countries, but realistically why should the other powers spend money on defense when, entirely of their own volition, the US seems to cover it all? This is what the Republicans cannot answer, they chose to spend eye watering amounts of money on their own military, no one forced them to do this, they could have funded social care but instead they went with more bombs.

All of their complaints should be referred back to their own policy decisions.

No arguments beyond 'the US seems to cover it all' is a trap.

The way I see it, the EU is building up its own defense industry, which it needs to do if they leave NATO. So one way or another, the defense spending needs to be up. Although leaving NATO would give more freedom in how to spend that money.

If you're actually spending for defense, and not force proejction, you don't need to spend more. You just need drones and nukes.

[–] testaccount372920@piefed.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You would need to spend money on those drones and nukes, right? Maybe not to the same extent though.

An independent defense industry is mostly a separate matter imo. Even if you want to keep the militaries the same size, you still need to invest in the local industry for the sake of domestic production.

France has nukes.

Drones are cheap. See Iran.

Seems reasonable, would really like it if world spending on weapons went down, hopefully the spike from being self sufficient is transitory.

[–] testaccount372920@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I hope the same. Imo defense spending is pretty useless for society. Except for maybe the development of new tech, but that can be done more efficiently by spending the money directly on that anyways.

What does europe do in the new world when china invades taiwan? Nothing?

What does it do abiut russian drone attacks supported by china?

[–] Tja@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

Realistically, nobody will do much if China invades Taiwan. The 9nly reasons they don't is first the example of the shitshow in Ukraine (a smaller power can resist a grater one for a long time) and economic (collapse of the whole semiconductor industry).
