Are the two of us not on different instances? I might not understand what I thought I did.

You are. You understand.

The real issue is where the communities are, rather than the users. Smaller instances can't easily attract large communities of people from outside their own, so the larger instances get to run the main communities for everyone. It's working as intended but it's all in the numbers.

A lot of the federation links were set up years ago, so I wonder if anyone is even activily trying to federate, like we used to when it all began.

Like, the NSFW instance went down some years ago, and I don't think anyone from the instance I'm using has bothered federating with a new one with that kind of content, or at least it doesn't pop up anymore. Which is fine, so I also don't bother, but for a newcomer it might seem odd that some instances have more connections than others and such.

When I click on this link it just opens the instance in my browser.

You have to subscribe to a community from your instance

So lemmy get this right, if I personally subscribe to !titties@fedinsfw.app then all users on my instance will eventually have that instance in their all feed?

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I believe legitimately yes though I'm not super positive. I just see it scroll across my all feed already.

This is one of the things that were easier in a browser or the older apps. It's quite tricky to do in Voyager. Can't even open the instance page. Whatever. I think I succeeded. There are now naked titties in my feed. I don't know if that's good but it feels more right.

I get lots of content from other instances and when I search for communities I see all the instances that such-and-such community? If you have spent any time online you know that large != good community. Yes some are defed' but that's fine by me.
