Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

The protest, organised by Across Victoria Alliance, brought around 300 CFA volunteers, farmers, One Nation and National party supporters, and a variety of renewable energy opponents into Melbourne on the sunny Friday morning.

Speakers, mainly men standing inside a large delivery truck, used Trumpian language to play up city-country divisions and went hard on militaristic calls for a war on transmission lines, renewable energy and data centres.

I'm disappointed that so many farmers and CFA (Country Fire Authority volunteers) who are going the be the most affected by climate change fronting this anti-renewables rally.

I'd be interested who organizes, agitates, and finances such insanity.

I don't have proof, but I think the 2018 Gilet Jaunes in France, which protested against a fuel tax, were an influence campaign. They were mentioned in the Epstein-Bannon emails.

Similar the "Farmers protests" in Germany 2023 which blocked motorways because fuel subsidies were planned to be shortened - they targeted the social democrat - Greens - liberal "Ampel" government.

My guess would be Heritage Foundation. Since they have working many parts of the world, including AU.

There is a web site which analyzes and tracks such efforts, desmog.org.

Nah! The Gilet Jaune came from a righteous place, it could have been co-opted but at the first they were protesting the end of the accessible Diesel program. The France gov a couple of year prior started a program asking people to buy diesel car (because they’re more efficient and produce less atmospheric gaz, etc.) at a discount. Fast forward to 2018 and the gov said « woopsie we don’t care anymore », now a bunch of low and middle middle class see their wallet being press for Big Gaz Companies’s profit and they got angry, knowing the French they took the streets and burn their city.
