Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

People shouldn't be censored for mentioning suicide. The way most of the internet handles any mention of it is a bit silly. Like, I don't think sending an automated bunch of links to resources is gonna be helpful when your cry for help was removed and you're back to being alone.
It's fine to talk about suicide.
Won't anyone think of the marketers? Can you imagine having your brand name sullied in an internet meme just because someone dies? It's unthinkable!
God forbid human communication be human centric. We have to protect the brand integrity of the companies waging war against our insecurities. Better to send some links, shift liability, and delete the offensive posts.
Not to mention how anti-intellectualism is encouraged and fighting amongst each other is ignored. But if you say something politically motivated or hurtful to big tech's interests, now that's a problem.
I mean I just got accused of being a 'rage bait' bot on another platform for expressing a pretty reasonable opinion.
Fuck 'em
I think the main reason its happening at all is because tiktok shadow banned for it, and youtube did too. If everyone hears their favorite influencer saying "Sewer Slide" or "unalive" eventually thats just the word for it.
I dont think anyone except those desiging platforms care at all, and they onky care because advertisers
People shouldn't be censored for ~~a lot of things~~ anything. Can we agree to stop playing the turn a blind eye to reality game? The older I get the more I get sick and tired of that shit. My comment got auto modded because I wrote that someone called me a fg-t in public. Great success?
It helps to take pride in speaking your mind in the way you feel comfortable with. If you get banned or get backlash or whatever, fuck it. I agree that self-censoring has become way too extreme and tbh I blame the shitty corporations who punished people for going against their arbitrary terms and narratives, and bowing down to them.
Edit: I want to make it clear I'm not talking about hate speech, etc. I just mean not being a slave to what others think of you. And allowing yourself to get backlash or banned or whatever here and there. Stand on your principles, as long as you aren't an objective piece of human garbage.
I can see that. I would rather see people for who they really are.
Like you state, this cookie cutter Disney version of TV shows really postures that notion. Okay, maybe I did have a wide variety of friends like the shows are ironically but it wasn't like a TV show. I mentioned this in a few posts now but it's like my friend that was Asian had her car keyed with--racial term for an Asian person--and does me censoring really do anything? My friend from Lebanon, his mom made the best food, had death threats after 9/11, with all the terminology that came with that. One of my friends got picked on and they called vinegar with a drawn out pronunciation and well of course they didn't get in trouble.
Worse yet, I had students that would say knee-growth, which was odd to hear because a coworker had cancer in his knee--which I didn't think was possible. And well that degraded to n-wah as in n-word. So we're back in full circle. And I mean I had to read aloud, huckleberry finn, so n-word city before the edited version. At at the end of the day, are we accomplishing anything by saying n-word, f-word, r-word?
