Does it still not work?
We have a few Google hub things around the house we use for weather, setting timers, and turning on a light or two.
We USED to be able to ask it quick questions and get reasonable answers. Like, can cats have olives? And we'd get a quick summary like "yes, in small doses, etc".
But now it's been neutered. Ask it the same question and it just says "I don't understand".
Like they're trying to force me into Gemini.
I knew Gemini couldn't do timers and control devices and stuff when it first came out but that was forever ago, I really thought they would've fixed it by now.
So I guess I'm still stuck.
I had the same thing, my assistant kept saying it didn't understand, so i just used it for timers until they kicked it out.
Yes, i can set timers and alarms with Gemini now. After a few days of nothing working, I installed an external clock app, disabled google clock, Gemini could make timers through the new app, then when i enabled the google clock app, Gemini could natively set timers and alarms BUT it's much slower than assistant was, at least 8 seconds of delay for any request, which is particularly frustrating after knowing assistant didn't have that delay, and the Gemini UI looks, sounds and feels very incomplete.
I'm sure you're right they nerfed assistant to force users into Gemini, and Gemini answers questions like assistant used to, but its a far inferior product.
