Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. 🇬🇧 Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇺🇸
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
  •

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Really? i get handheld terminal command lines with embedded copy functions when i search for solutions to my Mint problems. It's a pretty kind and helpful community.

I imagine most Linux communities have half a dozen or so online users, at any given time, just refreshing the New Posts section waiting to fix someone's problem and blow their mind.

There's a misguided imagination cloud about Linux, then in reality the incredible wealth of help and support Linux users invest and receive.

It's the FOSS "lone-wolf" thing. If you feel like you're on the outside, each Linux user sounds like a crazed wasteland wanderer.

Meanwhile, we're using comfortably customized environments curated and supported by our community, updating in the background, and enjoying stable 20-second boots.

!It’s really fun when they start arguing and blowing each others minds.

And I bet they’d introduce the kitty to the power of sudo pretty quickly… though giving the new murder hobo the power of sudo seems less wise than teaching Microsoft support peeps the power of grep.

I mean, look at that little guy. He’s totally gonna take over the world.

(Fuck it. Can’t be worse than the current assholes)

Gotta teach em bad habits early. That way they break things before it matters to much and they can learn!

I did, for a while, subscribe to the RSS feed of a Linux forum to help people xD

Mint is great for that. Fedora also offers up cookbook style instructions that can show both GUI and terminal commands. It's a great way for newbies to get used to both methods.

Mint community's first solution is always "have you tried just not doing that?".

Never got that one before, I always get multiple solutions and workarounds until a problem is solved.

That gets a lot of people in trouble and I really advise against giving people terminal commands when it can be avoided. Unless the person already is familiar with the terminal, they're just typing magic words into a black box and it reinforces the stereotype that Linux is this complicated and arcane thing.

Just tell them it's a very basic AI chat and so you need to be precise in instruction

    [–] imeansurewhynot@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

After all, what use are detailed instructions and explanations?

    [–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And that's OK. It does get them to open the term and see it and use it a little - copy/pasta is how we all started out. (Truth is, I still copy/pasta after more than 20 years should perhaps need) But that does not negate the GUI experience. I like and use the GUI every time I can.

But I understand the need for the Cli too. I can often use it to better see where a problem is. Something my GUI lovin' lazy butt doesn't always do.
