Everybody in scouting knows you don't wait until it gets dark to collect your firewood or pitch your tent.
I can't tell you how many times I did both of those though. Never by plan of course, but it happened
Everyone knows you shouldn't, but sometimes you have to. Sometimes you don't get to your camp site until dark, and you just have to make do.
It doesn't sound like that's what happened in this story though, assuming it's true at all (it isn't).
