Short hair is cute--Cropped with volume or just short-short. That is a really silly thing for onlookers to bring up, but low-hanging fruit is what they prefer to go after, as dealing with reality is too difficult.

And AMABs are indeed unfortunately often forced, either physically or psychologically(abusing their psyche until they "want to," do so as to try to pretend they gave their child choice) get their hair cut regardless of how they feel about it. My cis as cis could be cousin even, he just straight up preferred longer hair growing up and hated it cut, and it would harm him emotionally if a barber screwed it up(or if they were "influenced," as I suspect happened in some cases) and made it too short. He was collateral of a society that wants to strike down even the possibility of someone living a life of their own beyond the "values they were raised on,"(gross).
