Yeah, who here is "they" and who is "us"? He was very much part of the elite and completely removed from the concerns of normal people.

First part is true, not sure about the second. He was a deeply troubled dude but I do think he adamently cared about certain issues, and I think his own personal traumas maybe made him even more sensitive to the external problems he sang about. As for the song, pretty sure it was about the institutional leveraging of systemic racism.
