How can renaming another nations stuff be legal?
I mean, you can only enforce it in your own jurisdiction, right?
Your country can decide to call Sweden Poop-land, your own localized maps will label it Poop-land, but on swedish maps it will still be called Sverige.

It's shared between the US and Canada, it could just as well be named Lake New York.

First of all, your priorities are stupid. Second of all, no, it's literally not the plot of 1984. He never claimed "it was always lake America", he just used the existing legal processes to rename it. It's stupid, it's perfectly legal, and it doesn't change a single fucking thing about your life.
