There were former military in the black panthers. The military is an institution that exploits the poor and subjects them to moral injury in the name of imperialism- people who participate in it must do the labor to un-fuck their heads after, but those who have truly seen the belly of the beast and what horrors it would offer can be incredibly valuable allies.
