If anything goes wrong you cannot use the land in the area for thousands of years
At least we'll be able to use it if we keep our current path.
That's a bit of an overstatement. Radioactivity levels being elevated doesn't mean you cannot use the land. Just means you get more cancers.
And who wants to live there knowing this?
