I've been taking notes since 2023. Here they are, grouped by depravity level (subjective, yes, I know) and sorted by date within each group. Please share this widely as the election draws near. The last 3 weeks of the campaign are crucial and when this information will make the most difference.

Where possible the minister responsible is noted although really they are all collectively responsible.

It's a lot. As you get into it your eyes will glaze over a bit and you'll start skimming. Try to sit with each item and really feel it.

So there you have it. The last 3 years have been a trainwreck that was especially hard to watch - taking notes during it was my way of coping. I hope it makes a difference.

Once again, please share this with anyone capable of changing their minds. And/or bookmark this, you'll need it later.

There will be SO much that I missed out. Education and health is a true mess at the moment but that's not where my attention goes a lot of the time. Please add what you have in the comments, with a news link if possible.

I'm a big fan.

Batteries are not geographically constrained; modern sodium ion batteries are very safe, so inner city locations are not an issue. Iron flow batteries are also very safe, but not quite as convenient as sodium ion.

Well tuned, they can react to grid events in under a second; thus providing incredible stabilizing for a very reasonable cost.

Physically they can be quite small, if you distribute them around the country. Proving grid resilience in the event of emergency.

On a smaller scale; communities could have 2MWh "local" batteries charged by local solar installations.

We are talking stationary batteries, so energy density is not so much of an issue, aye?

"sodium ion batteries" are not something I am familiar with. I looked them up on Wikipedia they say nothing I could understand about how often they can cycle. From my (limited) understanding that is the Achilles heel of Li batteries we use in cars, computers and phones. I have a lot of varied experience with them form computers.

My prior (before asking you about this) was "flow batteries" (technically fuel cells I am told). Primarily for their long life and low cost. Except I cannot go out and buy them, I looked. There are some people building them but I have found none available that can compete with the lower capital cost of Li batteries.

I really like the idea of neighbour hood batteries, very hard to do in New Zealand because of the bureaucracy, am I off base?

Flow batteries are great at scale.

Pumps, piping, tanks... All scale really well. At small scale flow batteries are not great, you need all the complication of a bigger system without the capacity to offset the cost of that complexity.

The regulatory environment is both more complicated than you realise and not that bad. Neighbourhood scale batteries, could be totally managed by lines company, without involving much in the way of regulatory hurdles. The question is what incentive do they have to install them.

Yes.

Communities do.

A local trust would probably be pushing up hill to service local solar systems and consumers.

We looked at something similar in Waitati, and there was no way. A big, serious, NO!!
