Pet Semetary, 1989, packed theater. During the scene where the resurrected toddler is chasing Fred Gwynne with a scalpel, a baby suddenly cries out in the back of the theater. The entire audience jumped then burst out in laughter.
Who brings a baby to a Stephen King movie?
Someone who wants to freak out the audience, obviously.
I have a couple theater stories:
1986, The Fly. Movie starts, title sequence comes up, "The Fly". Guy in the back of the theater lets out a huge, throaty "YEEAAHH!". Whole theater cracks up.
1996, Independence Day opening day (July 4). Audience is totally engrossed, edge of their seats. The explosion is racing through the tunnel, the dog jumps through the door just in time, and screen goes black: "July 3". Audience goes fucking APESHIT, the highest energy I've ever felt in a crowd in my life.
That's amazing. Our youngest could have been taken to any number of movies, if it's dark and cold, he would sleep. Still not a good idea just in case he wakes... but he would have probably been fine.
