That poster was the first appearance of a bibendum, circa 1898. It was created by artist Marius Rossillon. Modern bibendums may look more familiar,

Something appears to be happening here, perhaps one bibendum has defeated another in gladiatorial combat with a tire shield and a bladed weapon? I am a little bit bewildered here,
