Thing is, they don't actually see Trump as their champion, they know he has done nothing for them. They just know Trump "makes Liberals mad", and that's as far as they care.
The analogy I like is that MAGA is like those high school seniors who have figured out that they are never going to college or get a good job. All they can do is disrupt and make everyone else miserable until graduation.
He's their excuse to be their worst selves. Any criticism of him is an attack on their own chosen character failings.
