It's a success because they got all the tech YouTubers to talk about steam OS and encouraging people to build their own for cheaper or better specs. All this helps valve gain new users which is where they make most of their profit not from hardware.

Gamersnexus did a whole video on this and the valve tax is 76$. So basically nothing.
