Polynesian mythology places strong emphasis on hair. Hair is the source of mana, evidence of warrior prowess, directly symbolizing strength and connection to ancestors.

You can't really have a Polynesian demigod portrayed as a bald guy, it would be like having a beardless twink in jeans and wife beater play Santa.
