Are you sure it's a book? Apparently it's a tradition in Uppsala, a student city in Sweden. A few videos made the rounds ten years ago or so.

Edit: added link. English Wikipedia doesn't put as much emphasis on Uppsala as other sources.

Might be a tradition, which sounds fun, but I absolutely read it in a book as a kid as well.
