What link? The link in the OP? I haven't clicked that (and plan not to.) My comment wasn't in response to any of the content per se.

But FUTO is assholes, and FUTO is mentioned all over the OP post.

The thing that first ignited my visceral hatred of them was that they extremely self-servingly coopted the term "open source" and billed a lot of their products as "open source" when they are very much not. And the ways in which their licenses were not open source was specifically in service to their own profit margin. (Don't be fooled by their ".org" TLD. They are fully for-profit.) All while crowing about how they're some kind of messiah of consumer rights in tech and badmouthing the OSI.

I can't tell you how many times I've had the displeasure of arguing with some FUTO fanboy trying to tell me that "tHe OsI dOeSn'T gEt To DeCiDe WhAt 'OpEn SoUrCe' MeAnS" in a Lemmy community with the OSI logo as its avatar and banner. FUTO finally stopped calling their shit "open source", along with a very self-righteous non-apology apology in which they reiterated that they hold "disdain" for the OSI. "we didn’t just stick a fork in OSI’s eye — we stuck one in yours". Yeah, you fuckin' did.

It gets worse. A blog post was recently published. Turns out FUTO did a lot of lying about their relationships with lots of FOSS projects in a way that implied they were endorsed by said projects. All to gain clout. Worse, they went way out of their way to platform the self-described fascist Curtis Yarvin. (From the article: "Among his many political positions, Yarvin has proclaimed that black people are genetically predisposed to a lower IQ than white people, and moreover suggests that black people are inherently suitable for enslavement.")

FUTO is not your friend. They're exploiting the FOSS community for profit.

yea i think it was bussy at the moment. Also in the page they literelly promote themselves as honest and open-source. Which if they're as bad as you say it's probably funny. Also what's the point of them spending so much money on proyects like ladybird, tor and i forgot what else in this scenario? would it be to promote themselves? reputation?

Also how do they get money? their FAQ just says it's like founded by the owner and that they hope to someday make money??? Which seems opaque and evaside unless the owner was a millionare from the start. Like it does say they're legally steuctured as a for profit or something like that but idk what they're selling?

Also Capitalist cult. Would definitely be happy if a Grayjay alternative existed.

NewPipe?

Only downsides of NewPipe I know of relative to Grayjay:

  • When YouTube purposefully breaks third-party apps, Grayjay tends to get a fix sooner than NewPipe.
  • I don't think NewPipe supports as many different services as Grayjay does, and I'm not sure it supports plugins the way Grayjay does. (NewPipe does support YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, PeerTube (or at least FramaTube -- which may be a single PeerTube instance, not sure, and I'm not sure if via that single instance NewPipe gets access to basically all of PeerTube), and media.ccc.de.

But for me, none of that comes close to outweighing how evil Grayjay/FUTO is.
