I don't know what kind of tree, but it's Northern/Coastal California.
Gotcha, NorCal is real good at growing big trees. But stuff from all over the world has been planted there for the last 100+ years. Need someone that knows trees in here lol
I'm not an expert and I don't think we have a "Marijuana enthusiasts" here,
(Edit to add, YES! https://sh.itjust.works/c/marijuanaenthusiasts@lemmy.world I don't think I did that right but I'm subscribed now.)
but I've lived in California a long time and I think they're old eucalyptus trees. Especially being planted on either side of the road like that. They aren't native, obviously, but there's enough similarities to the Australian climate that they do very well here and were often used to create a fast-growing windbreak for crops or roads. You can search "old eucalyptus" to see that peeling bark with smooth underlayer, strong vertical trunks and skinny drooping branches.
However , I could be completely wrong.
Was there an aromatic scent in the air, OP?
Definitely eucalyptus.
A perfume of a million plants getting it on. I can't confirm whether eucalyptus was in there.
