Fediverse vs Disinformation

2143 readers
136 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

No? Getting your visa revoked is way more serious. Getting your ETA revoked just means they want to take a closer look.

For all intents and purposes, none is more serious than the other, there's no practical difference. And if they wanted to take a closer look, they could have done that before approving the ETA. Doing this right now is a politically motivated action, not because of actual public safety concerns or whatever. It also doesn't help that it was revoked days before the scheduled visit, as a visa application won't be approved in time.
