I had an ex who wanted to get a futon off Craigs List. He tried to make me (a woman, who at the time was 23) go alone into some stranger's apartment to pick it up. Even if safety hadn't been a matter, how the fuck was I supposed to pick up and carry a futon by myself? Dude had no clue why I insisted he go with me. I had to spell it out for him.

Of course, he also didn't understand that when I said that I wanted time to myself, that I meant I wanted time to myself. He thought all women were like his mom and sister and only ever asked to be alone as a passive-aggressive way to ask for attention. No amount of explaining got through to him, leaving me in a no-win situation.
