Doesn’t look like they have too many people
https://www.cloudflare.com/careers/jobs/
We must take their word that every one of those 1100 fired employees performed different job functions and could not be retrained.
I think that’s the part of mass layoffs I find most disgusting. I went through one at a company, I guess I was “lucky” because I kept my job. After the layoffs there was more work for fewer hands, I ended up conducting 3-4 interviews a week to hire new people while still having to do my other job duties.
Watch that page, if they are so overburdened with excess talent that they need to layoff 1100 people it should be quiet right? They looked around and said “all these people, don’t need em”.
The common answer I hear is “well you might have too many engineers but not enough sales people” so you have to layoff engineers and hire salespeople and that’s no contradiction. But look at the list, it’s a hundred positions across various job functions and locations, and I will eat my hat if there isn’t at least a few people let go today that could fill those roles.
Lay offs are about keeping people in line, resetting what acceptable workloads are (you should work more because we were so generous not to fire you), and making investors happy.
