This is why no matter how you feel about russians it is important to continue to develop ways to encircle and force the surrender of russians with robots and other means that make it difficult for russians to choose any one moment as the time to go out guns blazing.

There is no more effective propaganda than a firehose of media that shows russians surrendering to Ukrainians and being treated relatively decently. There is no more effective propaganda than footage of Ukrainian POW facilities showing russians alive and ok being held under humane conditions.

I do think that in a way russia is counting on this last offensive they were capable of mounting for the next year or two fracturing into a human rights crisis where the russian soldiers became essentially abandoned in Ukrainian territory and are now Ukraine's problem, but even in that event that strategy doesn't work if Ukraine just deals with it and takes on a large number of POWs until the end of the war.

Yes you could argue that if Ukraine isn't ruthless than it will encourage russians to be braver in their assaults knowing they have the possibility of surrendering and being treated humanely but even in that case, it doesn't make them braver about dying in ruthless meat assault waves, it just makes them more likely to "be forced into surrendering" by the Ukrainian forces in a way that can't be directly punished through by retaliation from the russian military upon their relatives back in russia.

The russia war machine is existentially dependent upon portraying their enemy as an entity that will abuse russians and mercenaries fighting for them more than the russian war machine, the whole thing falls apart once that is evidently not true for the people on the frontline. How can your infantry have any real cohesive motivation in that case? The best result for each russian soldier is to get lost, isolated and captured by Ukrainian forces and then be kept in prison for the rest of the war so they can't be killed in combat. I don't care how much propaganda brainworms you have, when it comes down to life and death that awareness will dawn on many who previously considered themselves strong patriots of russia.
