I might be wrong about this about I suspect that not only did support for Israel hurt them, the whole "kamala is for they/them" thing might have done a lot of damage and its quite possible the storm revealing the latter would kick up might be the main thing they fear.

Yes the piefed project was created because some lemmy instances decided that those crazy marxists that invented and currently maintain lemmy were too extreme and 'unstable.'

This was around the time Bluesky brought a lot of liberal attention to both federation and the open source community, and along with that the audience who agreed with everything about reddit except the venture capitalists in charge of monetization joined lemmy, found out their 'We could've been at Brunch' level analysis is as left wing as a Hugo Boss coat, and quickly motivated the piefed team to hurry and develop and release their alternative.

As ridiculously pathetic as the lemmy.world admins are, and several of them are genocidal zionists, (some of them) at least stayed on the lemmy architecture. Piefed admins are even more right wing than that. Where the very notion of open source software makes them puke.

Not a single lemmy instance was involved in the development of Piefed.

And no-one in piefed objects to open-source software.
