In case it's not obvious, he didn't think that. He's saying he did so he can point out how it's not so bad. He's sane-washing himself at this point.
That or he's saying the quiet part out loud for his insider buddies and lamenting that they weren't able to buy-in low enough or profit enough as a result. Probably both.
