I understand the impact on China, but it seems to hurt Japan for example much more

Russia should actually profit from this, as an oil exporter, no?

What am I missing here?

I think this is more of a over simplified feel-good story for staunch anti-US activists. My understanding is that Russia is gaining alot from this war, but China seems to be suffering due to it.
