Imagine, 20 people standing in front of you saying "Good job", but there are 25 more who have to tell you that they don't like what you are doing instead of minding their own business... That's the average social media with down votes enabled.

they still give at least a wibe of what others opinion is about something. A lot of upvotes or downvotes tells of strong opinions, lack of negative votes tells of lack of negative opinions, a lot of both tells that thing being voted might be controversial.

personally i appreciate honest downvotes a lot, since they let me know i might be wrong about something or at least might need to reconsider.
