I lucked out super hard...!
I have a job where I've accepted getting paid less than I probably could get elsewhere in exchange for having little to no oversight working alone at a desk with a relatively light workload that can leave me with whole nights where nothing happens at all and I get to watch anime, chat with my friends on discord, and play video games on my laptop!
I work the night shift over weekends in a position where I:
a. the logistical details of where they need to go
b. a concise rundown of the exact nature of the problem
c. a hypothesis of what needs to be done, and
d. contact information for all relevant parties
about 80% of requests make it past step 3, (sometimes we don't have the service or equipment available)
about 60% of requests then make it past step 4, (sometimes customers don't accept the terms)
about 90% of requests then make it past step 6 (sometimes the fellas are burnt out and cannot safely do it).
so whenever the phone rings there's a less than 45% chance I'll end up having to go through the entire sequence
although sometimes tasks that actually get to step 7 have multiple contingency follow-up communications during handling.
As far as I've been told, the most valuable thing I bring to the table is that i'm a creature that is nominally sapient and conscious that is willing to be both of those things on the days and during the times no one else wants to be
and on top of ALL that,
the office is in a LITERAL basement!
My inner goblin is LIVING THE DREAM.
These jobs exist! YOU CAN FIND THEM! Look for businesses that say they have "24 hour service" and specialize in UN-FUCKING SHIT THAT FUCKS UP--you can be the person who coordinates a lot of unfuckery, which feels really damn nice and helpful and useful~! :3
offer to take overnight weekend shifts and commit to:
any sane manager would hire you on the spot if they believe you can do those three things...
because you'd be shocked how often extremely experienced, skilled personnel can't do basic shit like that.
Lemmy: I love my job! Here's why!

I don't blame them honestly ^^;
it probably sounded like i was bragging and it IS hella rough out there...
but although i had a lot to say about why i enjoy this job,
what i REALLY want to impress upon others that they can have a place in it too, if they don't mind strange hours on inconvenient days.
(but bruh seriously thank GOODNESS it seems like nobody else wants to work weekends, because having tuesday wednesday thursday off is fuckin CHOICE--i can run errands, do doctor's appointments, visit a bank, go shopping, all while businesses are actually OPEN without having to take time off work!! :D plus TWT looks like a crying wolfy face and that's cute...!)
I would love to see more people climbing aboard and being the Big Damn Heroes who set things right when greed, hubris, and an irrational trust of hallucinating chatbots derails mission-critical assets. All the while as you're either assigning tasks to specialists in a cozy office making a reasonable wage or being the boots on the ground in the field changing big business' diaper for HUNDREDS of dollars per task, you can don the smug shit-eating grin of "we told you so" and THEY'LL say Thank You Sir May I Please Have Some More! :3
I get you, but I have something like that as a 9-17 job. Those exist, too. Reliability is key! You don't don't have to be the fastest or smartest.
