You want to "lock" your stitch by reversing over it once or twice, for your first question.
For your second question, see if you can alter your stitch tension somewhere on your machine. You want to alter this depending on the thickness of the fabric you're trying to sew. Thicker fabric ➡️ more tension, if I recall correctly (but check me on that).
