Though maybe the link in the post did work silently as this link is now showing it's already in my library

Exactly. If it's ready in your library, the quick checkout links won't work on checkout.

I think the quick checkout link did work but it just gave me a blank screen instead of any confirmation, loading the store page then confirmed that it did work

oh, it also gives you a blank screen if the quick checkout worked. Otherwise you will get an error saying you already own one of the games.
