What's your distro of choice? Nearly every one has a systemd-less fork.

I recommend to also look at other operating systems. OpenBSD will never do any of that.

What can it run? Is gaming on BSD a thing?

Yes. Steam works on FreeBSD, but most of us just play simpler games.
