I don't think the cops they were following were decked out in full on military gear, wanting to execute people at the drop of a whim, and had a quota to get paid that they needed to meet.

This is suicide what you're recommending.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it?

It's a bunch of of psychopath near kids with near zero training who were given a gun. They're also the types that care about themselves and nothing else. Black Panthers were there to protect the community, they are here for themselves, nothing more. If bullets ever start flying, half of them will already run. The other half won't know how to do anything effectively.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Have you seen this happen or would it go more like Alex Pretti and they execute everyone?

[–] ToxicWaste@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 week ago

Alex Pretti was alone and didn't use his gun (whisely). if you have a lot of people with big guns at the ready, it is quite a deterrent. if those people do get attacked, the guns can do a lot of damage to the attacker. especially, if the people trained as a group.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Are you dumb? No, don't answer that...

[–] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Suicide for one or two people but not for a decent-sized group.

Police are militarized today in a way they weren't in the 1960s.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Why would numbers make a difference? I mean it, explain to me how this would go.

[–] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 10 points 1 week ago

You're in a group of 5 LEOs, nearby are a peaceful armed group of 20 civilians.

Are you going to start shit?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

While you're correct that the militarization of police (without any accompanying increase in discipline or oversight) has made this much dicier today, the basic lesson holds.

Power must be watched and challenged, with credible power backing the challenge, or it will never follow even its own rules.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Send me a video of you doing this, I'll cheer you on.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Hey, I'm not disagreeing that it's a high-risk endeavor. Alex Pretti showed that even a camera is cause for fascist thugs to murder you in broad daylight these days. But nothing will change by passivity.

Nor am I condemning people for not doing this. I'm just stating, in agreement with the meme, that action does have effects, even without ever actually pulling a trigger.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 week ago

that action does have effects

It certainly does, and Alex Pretti proves that they will execute you even after they took your gun.

I'm not even a pacifist, and do what you feel you need to do. Just don't try and get others to do it,

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

show the internet your face identifying yourself and then and only then will i support you

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I don't believe you that you have or will do anything. I believe that you're just trying to get chaos going in the US and get others to sacrifice themselves. I have no idea why, but I can guess that you're one of two types of people.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

People are going to die, man. That's not going to change if people decide to be passive. That just means people are going to die slightly quieter, like in an ICE holding cell. Shit, if ICE ever posts a significant presence in my fucked little corner of America, I will have to legitimately fear for my fucking life being intentionally ended when attending protests, which is not something I ever thought I'd have to say as a non-Black person (a privilege in this still deeply racist country, I know) in the USA.

And will I continue attending anyway? Fuck, I can't say for certain. I don't have a spouse or kids that will be screwed if I'm gone. I have a few family and friends who will miss me, but ultimately, it's my life (or it's end) that's most affected, so I certainly hope and would like to say that I'd still have the stones to keep going.

Of course, God knows my self-preservation instinct is worn to a nub at this point, but that's a different conversation.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

no i'm just making fun of your demands for other people. i'm surprised you can't catch that.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I believe that you’re just trying to get chaos going in the US and get others to sacrifice themselves

amen. so many people just trying to start shit on lemmy.

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

"don't you dare try to challenge the state monopoly on violence or they'll use violence against you even harder!!" oh nooooo.

Dunno if you've noticed, but they also execute people just for dropping their kids off at school or for helping other civilians they've assaulted. Personally it's my opinion that if they're going to kill you anyways, I'd rather die on my feet with a gun in my hand and the possibility of taking one or two of them with me. If you'd prefer being shot to death while already disarmed and muscled to the ground, don't let me stop you, but also please don't try convincing the rest of us that's the only "right" way to die.

There is no way out of this but through, and going through it will almost certainly lead to more innocent people dying at the hands of fascists, regardless of what resistance they offer. In light of that? Any and all resistance is acceptable, including that which is, or has the potential for, violence. Or put another way, it's only suicide if you're not shooting back.

Minnesota handled it extremely well. I don't think you can give me examples where the populace used guns and it worked. I can give you tons of examples where it worked to get people to safety and help their community in LA and Minnesota.

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don’t think you can give me examples where the populace used guns and it worked.

saying this on a post directly referencing the black panthers doing exactly this -- using guns to resist an oppressive state -- is already very funny, but I suppose you also think the French resistance used, what, kind words to kill Nazis in WWII?

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

During the ICE occupation since trump took office, but you knew that. Times are little different than 60 years ago. I know you're trolling, last comment.

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

During the ICE occupation since trump took office, but you knew that.

actually no, I can't read minds, but I'm flattered you think I can. For the future, you may want to try using your words instead of assuming people are psychic.

Nobody at present has yet bothered to even try, save for this article on the "Black Lion Party for International Solidarity" in Philadelphia. When they actually come into confrontation with the fascists and return fire, I'll be sure to give you an update.

I know you’re trolling, last comment.

that's fine, I accept your concession. better luck next time

[–] MrNobody@quokk.au 6 points 1 week ago

Minnesota hasn’t handled it well at all, ICE are still out there abducting people off the streets.

“As far as Homan’s announcement of a drawdown, there’s no difference,” said Alex Falconer, a Democratic state representative for Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. “In fact, it’s become a little worse.”
