Nail guns might be cheaper upfront but the constant cost of the nails will kill your wallet in the long run. A simple axe is the real cost leader.
Maybe the gun itself is, but I doubt it is with a compressor, especially one you can carry on your back. Plus, they're loud as fuck. Everyone would hear you coming.

I've got an axe which is a family heirloom. It's been handed down to me from my dad, who got it from his dad. Three generations.
Great axe. We've only had to replace the head once and the handle twice.
